COUNCILLORS from Millfields First School visited Bromsgrove’s Waitrose to see how the supermarket was promoting recycling and sustainability.
The councillors devised their questions before the visit and were given a warm welcome and a tour of the store by Waitrose staff.
Waitrose explained unsold food was donated to Bromsgrove’s Basement Project, the homeless charity Millfields School also supports at harvest time. Even unsold plants and flowers were donated to a local care home.
They were shown how the supermarket replaces non-recyclable plastic packaging with paper alternatives and were told plastic cups had been removed with customers purchasing reusable cups for their free cup of coffee.
Even coffee grain waste was recycled – it was offered to customers to take free of charge to fertilise their gardens.
Councillors found the store wasted very little, supporting the local community and the environment in the process.
Tracey Crebbin, a member of the Waitrose team said: “It was lovely to meet the councillors.
“We commend them on their delightful behaviour – the children were great ambassadors for your school.”
The school thanked everyone at Waitrose for welcoming the council to the store.
