YOUNG PEOPLE from Rigby Hall Special School in Bromsgrove have been catering for the community by opening their own lunchtime cafe.
The students, who are all in the sixth-form, run ‘Cafe Magique’ from 12pm to 2.30pm every Monday at St Godwald’s Church in Aston Fields.
Among the tasks they carry out are preparing food, waiting on tables and taking orders and washing up.
The cafe enables the young people to gain experience in a work environment, mix with the community and teaches them how to deal with customers and handle money.
Teaching assistant Mark Winson said: “It has been very successful and we have had some very good feedback from the customers.
“The children are getting a lot out of it.
“This will build confidence and ability in this crucial time when our students transition into life after school.”
Cafe Magique serves hot and cold snacks, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, soup and cake.
The school also thanked Waitrose which sponsored the food and DRP which helped design the the flyers and posters for the venture.
