PUPILS from Catshill Middle School held a ‘Best of British’ event to celebrate everything great about the country and The Queen’s 90th birthday.
On Wednesday (June 8) after the first lesson, the rest of the day featured an exploration of ‘British values’, a Great British Picnic, a bake a cake for The Queen and a red, white and blue fancy dress competition with optional tiaras. The children paid £1 to participate and the cash raised will go to Bromsgrove charity Libby Mae’s Little Angels.
Among the food on offer was fish, chips and mushy peas and ice cream.
The children were also posed the question: ‘What does it mean to be British?”
And, with the forthcoming EU in/out poll taking place in just a fortnight, the children took part in a Referendum Workshop and got to vote on whether they wanted Britain to remain in or leave the European Union. A total of 60 per cent of pupils voted to remain in the EU.
The whole day finished with a special school assembly where the prizes for the cake and fancy dress competition were awarded and chair of governors, Frank Fletcher, attended.
Head of school Maria Brannelly said: “A thoroughly enjoyable day – our pupils contributed so positively to their lessons and there was a great sense of community spirit throughout the day.
“Watching our pupils enjoy a Great British Picnic in the sunshine was ‘the icing on the cake’.”
