Maya gets award for standing up for rights

A SYRIAN girl has won a charity award from The Children’s Society for fighting for the rights of young refugees and asylum seekers.

Maya Ghazal who arrived in the UK two years ago has travelled a long road to be re-united with her family. Her resilience has been her strength as demonstrated by a talk delivered at St David’s Church in Shenley Green before Christmas.

The church itself helped raise £1500 for The Children’s Society over the last three years.

Maya spoke about her own experiences and how The Children’s Society helped her integrate into British society.

Maya said: “The situation in Syria was very bad. It was very dangerous, we couldn’t lead a normal life. When we left I was nervous about whether we would make it or if we would see my father again.”

She added: “Lots of people are struggling. I want to help them. I also really want to speak about the work of The Children’s Society because they have helped me so much. I know I can go to them with my problems at any time and they will listen.”
