STUDENTS from Catshill Middle School raised almost £600 for a computerised sewing machine when they took part in a stitchathon.
More than 200 pupils took part and Julie Pask, who is responsible for design technology at the school, said the event also tied in with this term’s reading scheme and school book fair.
While years six and seven used sewing machines to stitch patterns for bookmarks made from recycled fabrics, year five pupils used hand-stitching techniques.
Julie said: “The day was a hive of activity with staff, pupils and helpers including parents, grandmas, aunties and our chair of governors.
She added it was a really great day and the new computerised sewing machine would enable pupils to to incorporate intricately-stitched patterns, logos and lettering into their textile projects.
“We set the fund-raiser as a none-uniform day where each child donated £2 each.
“We also had orders for extra bookmarks and received many kind donations towards our cause.
“£582 was raised for new equipment by the end of the day – an unbelievable outcome.”
