PETROLHEADS Stefan Jones and Nicholas Irish left the Primrose Hospice on Wednesday (September 23) in their revamped Rover Metro to take on the famous Screwball Rally.
The pair are aged 20 and 19 respectively and the car, which is taking them 1,600 miles across Europe to raise funds for the charity, is older than them – at 23.
They originally set themselves a target of £700, but as The Standard went to press they had already collected £1,100.
Stefan and Nicholas have been dubbed Betty’s Boys and the car ‘Auntie Betty’s Mettie’ has been in the Irish family since leaving the Longbridge production line in 1992 and has never before left the Midlands. They’ve renovated and customised the car, which they are hoping will survive the epic five-day journey.
The boys decided to raise money for the hospice as Nicolas’ mum Tracy works for the hospice’s Family Support Service, which provides counselling, support groups and complementary therapies to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
