Traditional fun at Avoncroft

YOUNGSTERS have been finding out about the traditional games their parents and grandparents played, during special sessions at Bromsgrove’s Avoncroft Museum.

Among the activities have been hoop trundling, stilt walking, bagatelle and lots more.

The Friday sessions are part of the museum’s summer programme which sees different activities on different days.

On Mondays, there is Bricks and Sticks where children can make their own bricks, using traditional techniques, and construct walls out of wattle (willow sticks) and daub (clay).

Forest School takes place every Tuesday between midday and 2pm. There is an additional charge for the sessions, which include den making, building campfires and cooking in the great outdoors.

On Wednesdays, visitors can explore the great outdoors further with ‘bad bugs and pond predators’. An expert bug hunter helps participants find Avoncroft’s hidden creepy crawlies by peeking under stones and dipping ponds.

And on Thursdays, there are ‘have a go at archery’ and falconry sessions. Visitors wanting to try their hand with a bow and arrow just need to pick up a token when they arrive.

The falconry demonstrations, which take place throughout the day, enables visitors to handle the amazing birds and see them flying short distances.

There are also rides on the miniature steam train between 11am and 3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, thanks to the Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers. Tickets are 50p each.

Museum director Simon Carter said: “It has been great to see so many people here enjoying traditional past times.

“The feedback we have had has been amazing with everyone saying how much fun they have had doing the hands-on activities.

“Anything where kids can get their hands dirty and get involved always goes down well,” he added.
