Bromsgrove cancer patient does sponsored walk

A BROMSGROVE man who was diagnosed with the blood cancer Myeloma is undertaking a sponsored walk around Worcester City Centre on Sunday (September 14).

Andrew Borley, who is 53, will tackle the feat to raise funds for the charity Myeloma UK which helps patients with the illness and their families.

He is also a member of the Worcestershire Myeloma Support Group which meets every two months and helps support those diagnosed with the condition.

Myeloma is a blood cancer where malignant blood cells attack the bone marrow and there is no known cause – anyone can be affected by the illness.

Andrew was diagnosed seven years ago and has holes in his skeleton because of the Myeloma.

It is incurable and, because of the tiredness and weakness throughout the body, Andrew had to give up work and retire. He has had two stem cell transplants and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and other tablets.

He said he chose to do the walk to raise funds and awareness of the illness.

“The walk is two-and-a-half miles and for me may be more like a hobble around Worcester.

“Anyone diagnosed with Myeloma who lives in Worcestershire is most welcome to come along.”

Anyone wanting to take part should call Andrew on 07787 501935.

By the time The Standard went to press yesterday (Thursday) he had raised £326 for the cause. Anyone wanting to sponsor him can visit www.justgiving.com/WorcesterMyeloma/ and donate there.
