HOPWOOD Swifts have announced the club has folded due to a shortage of players impacting on the side’s ability to fulfil its fixtures, writes Neil Gordon.
Swifts played in Division One of the Birmingham and District Football League, and had a chance to win the title, when the club took the decision to resign.
However, the team suffered inconsistency, including two heavy defeats, resulting in missed opportunities to close the gap on then leaders Sutton United.
This led to a reduction in player commitment and the Charford Road based team struggled to fulfil its fixtures, resulting in the side resigning from the league and the club since folding.
Manager Matt Lewis said: “It’s a real shame. It would have been nice to finish the season, but we struggled for players at the end, having around only eight committed players each week.”
The club formed in 2021 and entered Division Five of the Birmingham and District Football League, before promotion to Division Four, which they won, earning a move to Division Three and promotion to Division One.
Lewis added: “We enjoyed some amazing times. We won Division Four by 15 points and were unbeaten at home all season while being watched by around 30 spectators each game.
“We unluckily lost the final of the Intermediate Cup to North Solihull last season in front of hundreds of spectators at Boldmere St Michaels’ ground.
“North Solihull were our rivals throughout our time, and we beat them in our last-ever game.
“Some of the players may set-up another team for next season, and I’ll go and cheer them on if they do.
“But for now I’m looking forward to getting my weekends back.”
