FOOTBALL - Alvechurch surrender early lead in defeat at Kettering

TIM Flowers felt his Alvechurch side threw away a point after surrendering an early lead in a 2-1 defeat away at Kettering Town.

Church led courtesy of Archie Crowther’s header on eight minutes only for Wes York and Isiah Noel-Williams to turn the game on its head at Latimer Park.

The result leaves Alvechurch 12th in the Southern League Premier Central table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

And Flowers admits his side must find a way to grind out results after slipping to another narrow defeat.

Flowers said: “I can’t fault the effort, I said at half time we’ve given away far too many free-kicks around our box.

“This division is governed by set-play teams with big players and good delivery, I said ‘do not invite pressure by giving away silly free-kicks’.

“Within the first 10 minutes of the second half we gave five free-kicks away on the left-hand side on the point of the 18-yard box, inviting balls into the box.

“In the end, something will drop for them and they score from a wide free-kick.

“We always carried a threat but didn’t work the goalkeeper [enough] and the winner is such a poor goal to concede.

“We’re guilty of finding a way to chuck away a point. We’ve found a way to not get on the right side of the line.

“We’ve got to a find a way to take points from games like that. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

“Every other game we play is a derby, we need to focus and zone in on the next two games and we need to get some points on the board.

“We’ve got an absolute glut of fixtures coming up, I think we’ve got nine in March which is quite remarkable for lads at this level.

“Redditch have completely turned their squad around, there’s a host of new faces, we need to find a way to get on the right side of the scoreline.”

Alvechurch broke the deadlock on eight minutes when Crowther headed in Erik Savkin’s corner from the left at the near post.

However, Kettering equalised on 55 minutes as York rose highest to head home Andi Thanoj’s free-kick from the right.

And the visitors completed the turnaround on 76 minutes when Noel-Williams poked Connor Johnson’s ball across the box past Dale Eve from close range.

Alvechurch host local rivals Redditch United on Saturday, March 8 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
