FOOTBALL - Smith targets new signings to address Bromsgrove Sporting's defensive woes following derby defeat

PAUL Smith hopes to address Bromsgrove Sporting’s defensive woes by adding reinforcements to his squad following a 2-1 derby defeat against Redditch United in midweek.

The Rouslers paid the price for two defensive errors against local rivals Redditch after Reece King drew Sporting level at the Victoria Ground.

Musa Cessay headed in from a corner which bounced in the box after just two minutes before a short backpass led to a penalty in the second half from which Jordan Cranston scored the winner.

And while Smith is not expecting new faces to arrive before Saturday’s FA Cup Third Round Qualifying tie at Chelmsford City, he admits Sporting must address their problems at the back.

Smith said: “As a manager you’re left scratching your head, I’ve got a decent group of boys but they keep making the same mistakes week in week out and we’re getting punished.

“Our Achilles heel at the moment is the goals we’re conceding, it’s not good enough, we can’t defend properly, we’re getting found out defensively.

“We’ve got two Cup games now, I’ve got to look to address the slide, it’s a case of now looking to freshen things up and bring something in to try and address that goals against column, I’m confident we’ll be able to get some bodies in.

“I’ve got no qualms with how hard the players are working and their effort levels and attitude, unfortunately we’ve got a bit of naivety which is costing us at the moment.”

The result leaves Sporting outside of the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone on goal difference.

Bromsgrove travel to Chelmsford on Saturday, September 28 with kick-off at 3pm at Melbourne Stadium.
