FOOTBALL - Alvechurch edged out by Stamford in top-of-the-table clash

JAMES Fry insists his side must find another gear following a frustrating 1-0 home defeat against Stamford in an early season top-of-the-table clash.

Alvechurch succumbed to Will Glennon’s 75th minute strike at Lye Meadow as Fry’s men saw their three-game winning run come to an end.

However, despite slipping to third in the Southern League Premier Central table, Fry is looking to build on Church’s promising start to the campaign.

Fry said: “I’m frustrated, it was a cagey game, we have to get used to teams coming here and making it a little bit of a stalemate.

“We have to go up another gear and find more solutions to cause opposition teams more problems and ultimately get more good attempts on goal.

“I wanted more control and more territory in their final third for longer periods.

“We still looked solid, the goal comes from a really naive free-kick that we’ve given away and the game is ultimately decided on that moment.

“I won’t get too low now we’ve lost a top-of-the-table clash, I know the areas we need to work on and the areas we’re doing well in and we’ll keep looking to build from this.

“We want to bounce back, we’ve got a run of fixtures where we’re playing teams who are up there.

“We have to make sure we don’t substitute the defensive solidity for all the attacking stuff we need but we have to add more to our attacking play.”

“I want us to be able to unlock the door and to have that little change where we can switch the game up.”

The game’s only goal came 15 minutes from time as Glennon turned home Connor Bartle’s free-kick from the right from close range.

Alvechurch are next in action at home to Stourbridge on Saturday, September 28 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
