FOOTBALL - Willis penalty earns Alvechurch first point of season in Harborough draw

JAMES Fry insists his Alvechurch side must improve in the top third of the pitch after earning their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with Harborough Town.

A Joe Willis penalty levelled the game on 81 minutes after Ben Stephens opened the scoring early on at Lye Meadow.

And after picking up their first point of the campaign in the Southern League Premier Central, Fry wants his side to provide a bigger threat to the opposition goal with Alvechurch yet to score from open play this season.

Fry said: “We’re off the mark, it’s a point but we’re frustrated, there’s a little bit of relief as well.

“We gifted them an early goal, they didn’t have another real chance in the game, we’re chasing the game until we scored which is frustrating.

“The work in the final third has got to improve, the ball before the finish really let us down, for all the territory and possession we had we need to be threatening the goal a lot more.

“We stuck at it and grew into the game, I was pleased with the reaction to the goal but we need more in the top third.

“When it clicks it will really click but we’ve got to do the work on the training pitch together to make sure that starts on Saturday.

“We’ve done enough over the first two games to win them, we’ve got to execute now.”

Church made the worst possible start in their first home game of the season as Stephens pounced on some slack defending to open the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes.

The home side dominated proceedings thereafter as Ammar Dyer and Omari Sterling-James both fired over the crossbar.

And Church spurned a glorious chance to draw level as Archie Crowther headed wide from a corner when well-placed at the back post.

However, the home side deservedly drew level with nine minutes left to play as Willis smashed home from the penalty spot after Tyrone Barnett drew a foul in the box.

Alvechurch are next in action against Biggleswade Town on Saturday, August 17 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
