BROMSGROVE and Redditch Athletics Club member Matthew Griffin produced a superb performance to finish runner-up in the junior boys’ (under 15) pentathlon at the County Schools Combined Events in Stourport.
The 12-year-old was in action in the 80m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m – all across one afternoon – and bettered all but one of his 22 opponents as he finished in second place with 1,635 points, behind the winner from Bromsgrove School on 2,106 points and ahead of the third placed athlete on 1,503 points.
Griffin, coached by Ipsley RSA Academy’s head of PE Paul Gripton, set new personal bests in the long jump (4.30m), shot put (6.06m) and 800m (2mins, 34secs) and equalled his best hurdles time of 13secs.
He cleared 1.34m in the high jump but the competition was held as a restricted jumps event, so each athlete only had six jumps in total.
Griffin has now been selected to represent Herefordshire and Worcestershire at the Regional Combined Events on Saturday, June 25 in Derby.
