THE OPENING day of the winter season proved fruitful for Bromsgrove Tennis Club’s ladies as two of their teams got off to winning starts.

The ladies section look set to face a tough campaign ahead with all the sides below Division One were promoted last season and the A Team held on to their top flight status.

However, the opening games have shown the strength of the club as Bromsgrove Ladies C Team began with a maximum point victory.

Facing a strong Stourbridge D Team in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Tennis League Division Four, the C Team rose to the challenge as Ann Banner with Di Wilson and Linda Wooley with Steph Armstrong claimed impressive wins.

Also winning 4-0 was newly-promoted Bromsgrove Ladies E Team as Ros Cooke with Lesley Hodson won both their games to send them on their way.

Sue Forrest with Lisa Rushton had a tough opening clash, but took it in three sets and then cruised to a straightforward two set victory in their next tie.

Elsewhere, Bromsgrove Ladies A Team made it two wins from two following a 3-1 victory over Leominster. A strong display by Imogen Sinclair with Jilly Whitcomb saw them win both contests, including a nail-biting final set tie break triumph.

Sally Franks with Rachael Mach then secured the other win to claim the honours for Bromsgrove.

Club captain Franks said: “To get such a good opening wins after all the promotions last year is great news and the whole Ladies squad is looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Meanwhile, the Men’s teams experienced mixed success in their opening battles as the B Team cruised to a four win over Stourbridge in Division Three.

But there was disappointment for the F Team who were just edged out by Ombersley’s C Team after losing the countback.

The D Team were also involved in a thriller as they were embroiled in a number of tight three set contests against Woolaston A.

Mel McGregor with Tim Roland put in a great performance to win both battles with a great display of match awareness.

John Casey with Tim Wright lost both their contests in three sets, but with the score at 2-2 the countback on sets and games won gave Bromsgrove the win.

A single set was enough to secure the Men’s E Team’s victory in a dramatic Division Nine encounter against Pershore B Team.

Captain Max Feltham teamed up with Bruce Turner and Aaron Oakes played with Matt Arnold in a bid to defeat Pershore who narrowly missed out on promotion last season.

Each pair had one victory, but Feltham and Turner lost their second match in two sets and Oakes and Arnold came up short in a tie break in the third set of a tight match. But the extra set won by them handed Bromsgrove victory overall.

Skipper Feltham said: “Bruce and I weren’t playing well but Aaron and Matt fought hard and did enough to give us the victory over some strong opposition.”

Elsewhere, Bromsgrove Mixed D Team got their Division Six campaign off to a winning start with a 3-1 win over Kidderminster B Team.

Pete Morris with Sue Forest won both their ties comfortably and Bruce Turner with Anne Simper got the extra points to clinch the win.
