BROMSGROVE star Luke Warren saw off some of the most promising fencers in the region to secure his place at the British Youth Championship in May.

The Year Seven pupil, who attends Ellesmere College in Shropshire, finished second in the West Midlands Fencing Youth Championships and will now to go on to represent the region at the national competition in Sheffield.

The event, which was held at Packwood Hough School in Shropshire, attracted fencers from u10 to u18 categories. Competing in his first event the u12’s, Warren won six of his seven qualifying matches and was ranked second out of 15 qualifiers going into the knockout stages. In the semi-finals he managed to secure a comfortable victory before heading into the final where he came up short.

Warren said: “For my first fencing event this was a really good experience. I have been training with the pentathlon club at the school and the coaches have really helped me”

The silver medal adds to what has already been a successful 2015 as he won the u12 West Midlands Tetrathlon Championships. He was crowned champion in the four events of swimming, running, fencing and shooting battling not only competitors but also high winds and horizontal rain.

Luke’s dad, Nathan added: “The final was a stretch to far but Luke brought home the silver medal. However, very positively for Luke, he will now represent the West Midlands at the British Youth Championships where I believe he will be the only pentathlete competing with all the other team members being fencers only.”
