BROMSGROVE A have lifted the Division One title in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Women’s Winter League after a dramatic 6-4 win away to Manor Park A.
After losing two of their opening three rubbers, a straight sets victory in the final match was required to take the overall win and mathematically confirm their status as champions.
Manor Park’s Hannah Griffiths and Jill Witcomb put Bromsgrove on the back foot from the start, beating the visitors’ Rachael Mack and Katherine Smedley 6-4, 6-4.
Sally Franks and Tina Manning hauled Bromsgrove back on level terms after a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Alison Kirkwood and Bethany Pye.
A second-set tiebreak was won by Bromsgrove to take the game to a deciding third set, albeit for the hosts’ Griffiths and Witcomb to edge their encounter with Franks and Manning 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Requiring a win in straight sets to edge the match and subsequently secure the title, Mack and Smedley came up trumps against Kirkwood and Pye with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
In Men’s Division One, leaders David Lloyd Bromsgrove A made the title safe with an emphatic 8-2 triumph against Droitwich A.
All did not seem to be going to plan, however, as Matthew Baker and Lee Cowan beat James Nolan and George Southall 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 to hand Droitwich the opening rubber.
James Troth and Michael Langston hit back for DL Bromsgrove in another three-setter, coming out 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victors against Benedict Buckley and Mark Jones.
Nolan and Southall built on their teammates’ success by seeing off Buckley and Jones 6-2, 6-2, while Troth and Langston sealed a tiebreak win over Baker and Cowan 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to confirm silverware.
Droitwich remain sixth in the table.
