TWO PROMISING tennis players from Bromsgrove continue to shine on the big stage as they starred at a recent AEGON Summer National Tour competition.

Josie Ward reached the final of the girls’ competition, while fellow member of Bromsgrove Tennis Club, Patrick Niedzwiedz, went one better as he came from a set down to win the boys’ event.

Ward had a tough group at Loughborough University and came second after losing a close three set to the group winner, but that was enough to get into the main draw.

Her performances in the round robin stages appeared to give her confidence as she swept through her quarter and semi-finals to made the final of the nine and under competition.

But Ward finished agonisingly short of claiming top prize as she was edged out in three absorbing sets 4-7, 7-4, 5-7.

Meanwhile, Niedzwiedz, the current county champion, was in great form as he won his group without losing a match and showed real determination to win some close three set battles.

Moving on to the main draw he showed his fighting spirit and skill to come through some tight situations to progress past the quarter finals and the last four.

These characteristics were also on display in the final as he lost the first set, but produced a great comeback, winning 5-7, 8-6, 7-2 to be crowned champion.

Coach James Griffiths said: “I’m really proud of the skills and determination Josie and Patrick showed.

“They are great ambassadors for Bromsgrove Tennis Club and again show how strong our junior section is.”
