Tennis success for Bromsgrove School

BROMSGROVE School enjoyed plenty of success at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire LTA U14 and U16 Boys’ and Girls’ County Double Tournament held at Malvern College and Malvern St James Girls’ School.

In the under-16 doubles event, from a draw of ten pairs, Bromsgrove’s Bobby Mekushina with Claudia Bullock won Group One while Gemma Calthorpe with Maisie Hucker were runners-up in Group Two.

This meant all four met in the semi-finals with Mekushia and Bullock prevailing.

This pitted them against Milly and Lucy Short from King’s School who they beat 6-1 to be crowned doubles county champions.




Bromsgrove reach the under-14 boys’ final with Stuart Shannon with Cameron Owen overcoming Sam Casidy and Sam Laider 4-0 to secure the county crown.

In the Scott Cup (boys’ under-18 singles), three out of four semi-finalists were players from Bromsgrove School.


The final was contested between Hans Barre-Schmidt (Malvern College) and Shannon who won 4-2, 5-3.

Meanwhile, in the Smyth Cup (girls’ under-18 singles) all four semi-finalists were from Bromsgrove School.

Georgia Jeynes-Cupper took on Bullock in the final with the former winning 4-1, 4-0.

Director of tennis Richard lawton said: ” Over the last four years, the tennis programme at Bromsgrove School has grown from strength to strength, resulting in success which has not been seen for 20 years.

“The school has won five out of a possible six trophies at the Hereford and Worcestershire County Championships, which is truly remarkable.

“We are all delighted with the fantastic performances by the pupils, especially Stuart, who not only won the U14 Doubles title but also the U18 Singles title, playing two age groups up.

“Congratulations to all.”
