HOCKEY: DROITWICH Spa went into their fifth summer league encounter against Stourport Blue with a changed team, and some playing out of position, but Spa were the victors 2-1 with goals from Rachel Cooper and Mollie Cresswell.

Droitwich started slowly as the team ajusted to their new positions. Rachel Cooper opened her Summer League account with an excellent finish after some good stick skills in the D as Stourport defence backed off.

Spa showed their determination and work ethic to keep Stourport out for the remainder of the half as they played the ball around.

Droitwich were a little lacklustre at the beginning of the second half as Stourport equalised from a short corner. From there on Droitwich found their mettle and began to dominant their younger opponents, and scored the go ahead goal as Rachel Cooper turned provider this time with a cross from the right as Mollie Cresswell popped up in the circle with a rare goal.

Spa weathered a Stourport onslaught as the half wore on, with Spa Keeper Lucy Hine making some key saves.

This was an excellent battling team display as Captain Sophie Blackmore explained afterwards: “This result is testament to the squad of women I have to choose from as I know they will go and give me their all as today we were with out top scorer Hannah Robson and first choice keeper Kaylie Thomas but still got our fifth win from five games.

She was also impressed with the teams determination. “Despite injuries during the game we were able to adapt our formation and you could see the confidence and quality in our approach play which has improved with our five wins this summer.”

Next week derby game against Redditch will be a stern test to their unbeaten start to the summer league campaign.

Anyone women wanting to return or play Hockey for the first time can do so with Droitwich Spa Summer Back to Hockey campaign as it has been extended to June 23rd.

It begins again on Monday June 2nd from 7.30pm – 8.30pm at Droitwich Spa Leisure centre costing £15.
