Saltmen ready to start work to revamp ground

DROITWICH Spa have been handed a double boost as they prepare to kick off the new West Midlands (Regional) League Division One season on Saturday.

On the pitch, the Saltmen have welcomed back wide midfielder Brad Burgess ahead of the opening game away to Willenhall Town.

And off the pitch the club confirmed they will start work on revamping the stadium and facilities at King George’s Playing Field later this month.

The £100,000 scheme to build the stadium and community pitch will start on August 16 and is due to be completed early in the new year.

The Saltmen’s first team have been playing their ‘home’ games in Stourport for the past three seasons because the facilities at King George’s did not meet the standards but they can now look for football coming home. The plans will also make the site a centre of sport for the whole town.

“The development, which is being taken forward in partnership with Wychavon District Council, Wychavon Leisure and the Football Foundation, also includes significant redevelopment of the existing facilities including refurbishment of the Pavilion Club House and the building of additional changing rooms,” said the club.

“The new facilities will be enjoyed by all teams under the Droitwich Spa Community Football Club banner, including the open age first team, Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls, Droitwich Spa Veterans and Droitwich Spa Ladies football teams, Droitwich Spa Hockey Club and Droitwich Spa Boxing Club, along with providing access to other clubs in the local area.

“The development will also see first team football return to the town following an absence of three years, during which time the first team have had to play their games at Stourport Swifts due to King George’s not being at the required standard for the level the team play.

“We would like to thank Wychavon District Council, Droitwich Town Council, Wychavon Leisure and the Football Foundation and the many other organisation that have helped make this a reality.”

The club continue to raise money via their online funding campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/f/droitwich-spa-fc-ground-fund?

Droitwich head to Bloxwich to face Willenhall on Saturday before their first ‘home’ game against FC Darlaston on August 14.
