RUGBY UNION - Trumper hat-trick in vain as Bromsgrove RFC beaten by leaders Newport

WILL TRUMPER’s hat-trick proved in vain as Bromsgrove RFC were beaten 24-39 by league leaders Newport (Salop).

Trumper scored once before the break and twice in the second period with Will Harris also dotting down for the Boars at Finstall Park.

The result leaves Bromsgrove in sixth place in the Midlands Premier table, having lost at home for just the second time this season.

In-form Newport were on a 14-game winning run heading into the clash and raced into the lead with two converted tries.

However, Bromsgrove responded when a turnover and quick pass set Trumper away to score from 60-metres out only for Newport to score in the corner just before half time to head into the break with a 19-7 lead.

And the league leaders showed their class to score two tries in the space of two minutes at the start of the second half to take the game out of Bromsgrove’s reach.

However, the Boars refused to lie down and ran in three further scores to secure a try bonus point before Newport touched down with the final play of the game.

Bromsgrove are next in action away at Nuneaton on Saturday, March 12 with kick-off at 3pm at the Liberty Way Ground.
