WILL Tanner’s 12-point haul helped Bromsgrove RFC return to winning ways with a narrow 17-13 victory away at Derby.
Tanner kicked two penalties in either half while Josh Holt scored Bromsgrove’s only try as the Boars battled to a hard-fought win at Haslams Lane.
And the result means Bromsgrove sit fifth in the Regional 1 Midlands table.
The Boars took an early three-point lead as Tanner kicked a second-minute penalty only for Derby to level the game with a drop goal moments later.
And the home side scored the game’s first try on 17 minutes after sustained pressure on the Bromsgrove line.
Tanner reduced the deficit with a penalty on 22 minutes with the Boars fortunate to head into the break only four points behind following Derby’s dominant first-half display.
However, the visitors improved after the interval and scored their only try when Holt dived over in the corner on 46 minutes with Derby temporarily down to 14-men for a deliberate knock-on.
And Tanner kicked his third penalty on 57 minutes to put the Boars into a four-point lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
Derby closed the gap to a single point with a penalty of their own only for Tanner to successfully kick a fourth penalty with one minute left to play.
With just enough time left for a restart, the Boars managed to turn the ball over on their own try line before kicking to touch to secure a narrow win on the road.
Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Bridgnorth on Saturday, December 16 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Finstall Park.
