RUGBY UNION - Bromsgrove earn first win in high-scoring affair

BROMSGROVE RFC secured their first win of the season with a high-scoring 45-26 bonus point win against Stoke-on-Trent.

The Boars had already secured a try bonus point by half time as Will Trumper scored twice with Ed Spalding, Callum Megram, Nathan Fisher and Josh Holt also touching down.

And the result means Bromsgrove sit fifth in the Regional 1 Midlands table with one win and one defeat from their opening two matches.

Keen to put their two-point defeat to Oundle last weekend behind them, Bromsgrove raced into a 31-point lead at the break.

The Boars took an early lead through Will Tanner’s penalty before Trumper scored the game’s first try to extend Bromsgrove’s lead.

And the home side struck again on 20 minutes when captain Spalding broke the line and ran wide to score against the run of play.

Bromsgrove then grabbed two tries in the space of five minutes before the break as Trumper scored his second of the game and Megram dotted down with Tanner converting both scores.

And the Boars extended their lead in the second period when Fisher opened his account for the season after Stoke’s indiscipline allowed Bromsgrove to kick upfield.

However, at 38-0 Bromsgrove took their foot off the gas which allowed the visitors to run in three unanswered tries before a quick breakaway halted Stoke’s momentum as Holt received the ball out wide and raced underneath the posts to score with five minutes left to play.

Stoke would have the last laugh as they scored a bonus point try with the final play of the game but it was too little too late as Bromsgrove secured a crucial first win of the 2022/23 campaign ahead of a tough run of fixtures that could define their campaign.

Bromsgrove are next in action at Bridgnorth on Saturday, September 17 with kick-off at 3pm at Bridge Street.
