BROMSGROVE RFC suffered a 33-23 defeat against Stourbridge in their first home game of the season following an opening day victory at Nuneaton.
The game took place in front of a bumper crowd at Finstall Park as Will Harris and Finn Haynes crossed for tries for Bromsgrove while Will Tanner added 13 points from the kicking tee.
However, Stourbridge scored a try with the final play of the game to deny the Boars a losing bonus point.
The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty from in front of the posts after just four minutes before Tanner responded with penalty of his own to bring the scores level.
Bromsgrove lost Jack Medley to a yellow card soon after and Stourbridge made the most of the man advantage to score the game’s first try.
Both teams scored a penalty apiece before the break as the Boars trailed by five points at the interval.
Stourbridge made an explosive start to the second period and scored two tries either side of another Tanner penalty to take a commanding 14-point lead.
However, repeated infringements saw the visitors reduced to 13-men and the Boars made the most of the extra men to level the game as Harris and Haynes touched down and Tanner converted both tries.
The away side reclaimed the lead through a penalty with 10 minutes left to play and denied the Boars a losing bonus point at the death with their fourth try of the game.
That came after Bromsgrove made an excellent start to their Regional 1 Midlands campaign with a 44-25 victory at Nuneaton.
Boars full back Tom Sadler ensured the visitors made the perfect start to the new season when he ran in the game’s first try from 80-metres out and finished under the posts.
A back-and-forth first period saw seven tries scored as Bromsgrove trailed 25-19 at the break.
However, the Boars dominated the second half and scored 25 unanswered points to claim victory against the newly-promoted side.
Bromsgrove are next in action against Kenilworth on Saturday, September 21 with kick-off at 3pm at the Jack Davies Memorial Ground.
