RUGBY UNION - Boars sit second after narrow Stoke win

Bromsgrove Editorial 8th Dec, 2022   0

DREW Harper crossed twice for Bromsgrove RFC as the Boars claimed a thrilling 31-28 victory away at Stoke to secure their sixth successive victory.

Harper’s tries came either side of Robert Green’s effort with Russell Brown and Tom Hardwick also touching down at Hartwell Lane.

The result means Bromsgrove sit second in the Regional 1 Midlands table just three points behind leaders Dudley Kingswinford.

And Harper’s opening try after just two minutes silenced the Stoke supporters as the powerful number 8 crashed over only for the home side to hit back with two tries in the space of five minutes.

However, the Boars scored their second try on 15 minutes when the Bromsgrove pack powered over from a lineout before repeating the feat 10 minutes later to lead 17-14 at the break.

Stoke regained the lead at the start of the second period before an adjustment at half-back allowed Bromsgrove to turn the game in their favour.

Brown dotted down the Boars fourth try, converted by Will Harris now playing at fly-half, before Hardwick crashed over for an impressive score which was also converted on 67 minutes as the flanker finished off a mesmerising move that involved several offloads.

The home side grabbed a late reply on 76 minutes but it proved too little, too late, as the Boars held on for a narrow victory despite missing three key players.

Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Bridgnorth on Saturday, December 10 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Finstall Park.
