BROMSGROVE RFC claimed a hard-fought 16-11 victory away at league leaders Dudley Kingswinford to secure their first away win of the season.

Rich Hance crossed for Bromsgrove’s only try as Adam Whiteman kicked two penalties and Will Tanner added five points from the kicking tee.

The result means the Boars sit sixth in the Regional 1 Midlands table as Bromsgrove finally broke their away day curse having picked up a losing bonus point in each of their previous four trips on the road.

However, the visitors made a slow start as Dudley, who had won each of their last six matches, kicked two early penalties to race into a six-point lead after Bromsgrove were penalised at the breakdown.

And the Boars then lost Ed Spalding to the sin bin for a deliberate knock on but defended well to keep the deficit at six points until he returned to the field which left their opponents frustrated.

Bromsgrove finally registered their first points five minutes before half time through Tanner’s penalty.

And the Boars then scored their only try when Hance powered over from a tap and go penalty with Tanner adding the extras to send Bromsgrove into the break with a four-point lead.

The second period proved a hard hitting affair as both teams gave away penalties and missed chances to score before Whiteman kicked a penalty to extend Bromsgrove’s lead to seven points.

However, Dudley set up an exciting finish when they crossed for a try with five minutes left to play but were unable to convert the score to leave the Boars two points ahead.

And Whiteman kicked a second penalty at the death to stretch Bromsgrove’s lead to five points before Hance ripped the ball away at the breakdown and kicked into touch to confirm an impressive victory for the Boars.

Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Kenilworth RFC with kick-off at 2.15pm at Finstall Park.
