RUGBY UNION - Boars begin year with narrow Syston defeat

BROMSGROVE RFC started the New Year with a narrow 10-8 home defeat against Syston as the Boars saw their six-game winning run come to an end.

The Boars came away with a losing bonus point as Tom Sadler scored Bromsgrove’s only try and Will Harris kicked a penalty in a cagey affair at Finstall Park.

And the result means Bromsgrove sit third in the Regional 1 Midlands table, seven points behind leaders Dudley Kingswinford.

Bromsgrove dominated territory and possession in the first half and edged into a three-point lead courtesy of Harris’s 22nd minute penalty.

However, the Boars were unable to convert their dominance into more points as Syston scored an excellent try underneath the posts to take a 7-3 lead at the break.

The home side restored their lead on 42 minutes when Sadler crashed over in the corner although Bromsgrove were unable to convert to leave them one point ahead.

Syston turned the game back in their favour with a penalty just past the hour mark and held on until the final whistle sounded to ensure the Boars started the year with a defeat.

And the loss means Syston completed a league double over the Bromsgrove having beaten the Boars 14-9 in a similarly close encounter back in October last year.

The Boars also saw their perfect home record come to an end having won each of their previous five home matches this season.

Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Burton on Saturday, January 14 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Finstall Park.
