NORTH East Worcestershire Ravens enjoyed an action-packed weekend by entertaining Birmingham Bulldogs and staging a mixed age tournament for juniors.
A Ravens side still missing numerous key players through injury went down to a 70-32 Midlands Division One defeat on Saturday, but there were aspects of the performance for the coaches to be happy about.
Try-scorers for Ravens were David Swaysland, Jonnie Mills, captain Liam Dunne (2), Dan Patrice and debutant Scott Rudge. Dave Wimbury booted four conversions.
Although Ravens fought back hard in the second half, it was too little, too late. Ravens return to action at Derby on Saturday, June 3.
On both Saturday and Sunday, Ravens hosted clubs from Telford and Nottingham in small-sided tournaments for Under-9s, U13s and U15s. The occasion offered new players the chance to get a taste of a competitive but fun environment.
In addition, CPR and defibrillator training was given to juniors by Rob and Maggie from the Charlotte and Craig Saving Hearts Foundation, which is Ravens’ chosen charity. Rides, stalls, food and drink also added to the fun.
Ravens’ director of rugby Jason Spafford said: “The weekend festival was a huge success, even with the weather against us on the first day, but all the clubs said it was a great weekend and a brilliant idea to show the kids CPR and defibrillator awareness, as well as a huge amount of game time for all the ages involved.
“The entire club worked hard to get the event going and look forward to hosting the next one on July 1/2 with activities to include training from Super League club St Helens.”
