Junior festival shows NEW Ravens' togetherness

IT WAS a busy weekend for North East Worcestershire Ravens who held a junior festival and had their open age team taking on Nottingham Outlaws in Midlands Division One.

The main event on Saturday was the seniors’ league match, but the depleted hosts were beaten 78-28 in this 11-a-side fixture despite tries from debutants Paul Crocker (2), Tommy Reynolds (2) and captain Liam Dunne as well as four conversions from Alex Paynter.

Prior to this, a popular coaching session for juniors was taken by three members of Super League outfit St Helens.

On Sunday junior Ravens players faced Telford Raiders and Nottingham Outlaws at U9, U11, U13 and U15 level.

The sun was out again and youngsters were surprised by a guest appearance from St Helens player Ricky Bailey, who made a presentation to all the juniors who took part as well as answered questions and posed for photos.

Ravens’ director of rugby Jason Spafford said: “It was a brilliant weekend with some great training, fixtures for all the ages of the club, as well as some brilliant fund-raising for Every Heart Matters, which is raising money for defibrillators into local schools.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the weekend possible, from bar staff to coaches.

“It has been brilliant to see all ages of the club involved in one way or another.

“We would like to extend our thanks again to St Helens RLFC, especially the coaches and Ricky Bailey for showing their support to the club as well as the charity fund-raising.”

The seniors return to action on Saturday with the visit of Derby City and Ravens juniors will be training at the club on Sunday.
