INSIDE VIEW - Richard Gregory's Bromsgrove Sporting Pre-Stourbridge Column

Bromsgrove Sporting skipper Richard Gregory writes for The Standard in his weekly column, providing his thoughts on last weekend’s loss, and looks ahead to Saturday’s FA Cup showdown with Stourbridge.

ANOTHER bad day at the office on Saturday saw us lose at home to Banbury.

I felt we started the game quite well, we were on top for the first 20 minutes or so, and if Leon’s strike went in, the game may have been completely different.

Having said that, at the moment we are just giving goals away too cheaply.

We went in at half-time 2-0 down, at which point it’s always going to be tough to get back into the game.

The gaffer expected a response in the second 45 minutes to try and get something out of the game, but we just weren’t good enough.

We showed a lack of ideas and quality – I think if we were still playing now we still wouldn’t have scored, which is unusual for us.

In my opinion, we have been poor all season, other than the match at Tamworth.

We are gifting teams head starts with poor mistakes, and going forward we are not creating as much as we would like.

First and foremost, at any level of football you play, you must be hard to beat. If you’re not, you will find that you will lose a lot more games than you win.

All the lads know this, we’ve spoken about what’s required moving forward, and in football you always have a game just around the corner to put things right.

We have had a tough start to the season, and although results haven’t been what we would like them to have been, we are not a million miles away.

We are facing sides with good quality, teams who have been at this level and above for many years.

I truly believe in football if things aren’t going well, you get back to basics and you work hard – on the training ground first, and then into match day.

If you do this, your rewards will come.

On Saturday, we have a match where we can put the league to one side for the weekend in an FA Cup game where our local rivals Stourbridge are the visitors – it’s a perfect fixture for us to put things right.

We are aware that last week’s performance, especially being at home, wasn’t good enough.

The players are raring to go to put things right. All of your support is important to us, so get behind us and let’s get the place rocking!
