FIVE wickets from Jonathan Hunter proved to be in vain as Avoncroft were edged out by Lye in their Worcestershire County League Division Three fixture.

Lye put Croft into bat after winning the toss with only one player failing to reach double figures as the hosts posted a respectable 235-9 from their 50 overs.

Josh Cound top-scored with 45 while Daniel Elliott (31), Tom Murray (27) and David Anson (22) were the other players to get past 20 runs.

Waqas Ahmed (4-60) was the pick of the bowlers for Lye, with Irfan Ahmed and Ansar Mahmood also bagging two wickets each.

In reply Lye had five overs to spare when they claimed victory, posting 236-7 in an innings in which extras (46) were joint second top-scorer with Nadeem Hussain.

Azhar Naeem (52 not out) led the way with the bat while Hunter took 5-70 from his 17 overs.

Avoncroft travel to third-from-bottom Eastnor tomorrow (Saturday).
