BROMSGROVE Sporting Ladies recorded the first ever win in the FA Cup after beating Sedgley and Gornal Ladies at the Victoria Ground in the first round of qualifying.
The home side got caught on the break and found themselves 1-0 down in the first half.
But in the second half, Sporting came out battling and managed to grab an equaliser in the 80th minute when Kate Bonser’s well-struck shot from the edge of the box found its way into the net.
It remained 1-1 and the encounter went to penalties.
Spot kick drama
Bromsgrove goalkeeper Ashleigh Legge gave her team the perfect start by saving the first penalty.
Two further spot kicks were missed by Sedgley and Gornal and Sporting went through 3-1 after the shootout.
Manager Alan Horton said: “We were caught cold in the first half for their goal but the girls did so well to get back into the match.
“In the second half we put them under so much pressure and created numerous chances.
“Sedgley and Gornal were a good side and passed the ball around well but we stuck to the game plan and really picked it up.
“It was a very well-deserved victory and it is a massive piece of history for the team.”
Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies will be away to Coundon Court Ladies near Coventry the next round at 2pm on Sunday, October 1.
Alan added: “Everyone is welcome to come along and support us.
“We are so grateful for the backing of the fans.”
On Sunday, September 17, Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies travel to Evesham United Ladies FC in the Worcester County Cup. Kick-off 2pm.
