Hines' heroics in vain for Barnt Green

A MEAGRE batting tally by Barnt Green led to their second successive defeat in Birmingham & District Premier Division One, despite Adam Hines taking five wickets.

Last weekend’s 100-run loss to Moseley leaves The Green fifth in the division, ahead of their season finale at third-placed Shifnal on Saturday (noon).

All seemed to be going in the hosts’ favour when Mose lost two wickets in the second over, with Hines (5-47) dismissing opener Asim Shoaib (0) and Alex Thomson (0) with just one run on the board.

Bhavik Patel (12) and Brinder Phagura (51) pulled Moseley back on track with a partnership of 46. With top-scorer Phagura trapped lbw by Zain Ul-Hassan (2-35), Imandeep Kang (48) resumed big-hitting responsibilities, firing three fours and three sixes.

Kang battled on until he became Hines’ fifth and final victim at 151-9, though Usman Awan (13) and Fred Eburah (18no) ensured the visitors signed off with a final-wicket partnership of 33 to finally be all out for 184.

Barnt Green made a wretched start in their pursuit of the 185 target, slipping to 43-6 after being tormented by the bowling duo of Phagura (4-29) and Eburah (3-38).

Dominic Harding’s score of 14 was as good as it got for the hosts, who, other than a partnership of 18 between Darrel Williams (6) and Daniel Meredith (13), failed to get anywhere close to challenging for a victory. They were all out for 84 in 26.3 overs.
