FORMER Bromsgrove Rovers defender and Pershore Town manager Quentin Townsend believes Paul Smith’s Rouslers will be the clear favourites to win this season’s Midland League Division One title.

The new campaign kicks off this weekend, with Sporting welcoming Southam United to the Victoria Ground tomorrow (Saturday).

Sporting, who finished as runners-up for a third season in a row after losing out to Coventry United last term, will be hoping to go one better and Townsend told the Standard they’re the side to beat.

“It’s pretty fair to say Bromsgrove Sporting are the stand-out team by a mile and they’re my tip to win the division,” said Townsend.

“They have won all their pre-season games, and last week’s FA Cup tie and they will be confident.

“Paul Smith has signed some cracking players and he has got a big squad, but the problem will be keeping them all happy. You can only play 11 every week.

“Having said that, I can’t see anyone challenging them. They are the overwhelming favourites going into the season.”
