FOOTBALL - Tim Flowers expects relegation fight to go down to the wire after Bromsgrove Sporting held by Royston Town

TIM Flowers expects Bromsgrove Sporting’s fight against relegation to go down to the wire following a draw against bottom-of-the-table Royston Town.

The Rouslers rescued a point against basement club Royston as Luke Benbow’s injury-time penalty cancelled out Ollie Stephenson’s early strike at Garden Walk.

The result leaves Sporting just two points above the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone.

And Flowers believes his side’s battle to avoid the drop will go down to the final game of the campaign.

Flowers said: “It’s a good point because we’re one-nil down when the board has gone up [for injury time].

“We edged the game, they haven’t thrown any towels in and there’s not been an exodus of players.

“We concede a poor goal after a really good start in the first quarter hour, we were on the front foot and they score the first time they break out.

“Should we win the game? Yeah, probably. But we’re still guilty of missing chances and the goal we conceded was not good enough.

“I think this bottom end of the table scenario will go to the wire. We’ve got some tough games.

“Never disrespect a point ever. I was taught that when I was young.

“It was a committed, honest, proper display and we gave it a right go.”

Royston stunned the Rouslers on 12 minutes when Stephenson fired a low effort into the bottom left corner from 15-yards out.

However, Sporting’s pressure eventually told deep into injury time as Harvey Beckett caught Shay Willock in the face with a raised arm off the ball in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Beckett received a straight red card as Benbow kept his cool from the penalty spot to fire the ball into the bottom left corner and earn the Rouslers a point.

Bromsgrove are next in action against Spalding United on Saturday, March 28 with kick-off at 3pm at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.
