FOOTBALL - Sporting win on the road at St Ives

MO NJIE’S first Bromsgrove Sporting goal ensured the Rouslers returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory away at St Ives Town.

Sporting led through Dan Sweeney’s first-half goal before Jonathan Edwards equalised from the penalty spot only for Njie to score the winner at Westwood Road.

The result means Sporting sit ninth in the Southern League Premier Central table, just four points outside of the play-off places.

St Ives started brightly and forced Rouslers keeper Ollie Taylor into an early save as both teams struggled to create a clear cut opening for much of the first period.

However, Sporting broke the deadlock on 36 minutes when Sweeney produced a cute finish into the bottom right corner after a superb length of the pitch break from Miro Pais who provided the assist.

Bromsgrove went close to a second moments later when Pais blasted a shot into the side netting from Jack Tolley’s pass.

St Ives ended the half well and should have drawn level when the ball was played into Nabil Shariff only for the forward to blaze the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

However, the home side drew level on 66 minutes when Edwards found the bottom right corner from the penalty spot to send Taylor the wrong way after Lewis Wright committed a foul in the box.

The visitors restored their lead just five minutes later when Njie headed Pais’ free-kick from the left into the top left corner to net his first goal in Sporting colours.

Sporting had a chance to extend their lead when the ball broke to Pais on the edge of the penalty area as the midfielder’s tame effort was easily gathered by St Ives goalkeeper James Goff.

The home side came close to finding a second equaliser when Jordan Williams turned the ball inches past the post from substitute Tyrone Baker’s initial effort.

And Sporting spurned another chance to settle the game when Sweeney’s tireless work forced a mistake in the St Ives defence before the striker shot wide as he ran towards goal.

However, the Rouslers saw out the remaining minutes in freezing conditions to extend their unbeaten away run in the league to four matches.

Sporting are next in action at home to Needham Market on Saturday, December 17 with kick-off at 3pm at the Victoria Ground.
