FOOTBALL - Sporting suffer back to back defeats in league and cup

BROMSGROVE Sporting were dumped out of the Worcestershire Senior Cup by Evesham United in midweek after the Rouslers were beaten by Hitchin Town in the league last weekend.

Sporting play one level above Evesham but were upstaged by the Southern League Division One South side as first-half goals from Adam Mace and Jeff Putz ensured the Rouslers suffered a quarter-final exit.

Despite Dan Sweeney’s second-half penalty, Sporting were unable to draw level and missed the chance to advance to the semi-finals at the Victoria Ground.

And that came after Bromsgrove were beaten 2-0 by Hitchin at Top Field as goals from Diogo Freitas-Gouveia and Ashley Hay meant the Rouslers started the New Year with a defeat.

The result means Bromsgrove sit 11th in the Southern League Premier Central table.

Sporting named a strong side in the Worcestershire Senior Cup clash against Evesham but fell behind on 10 minutes when Putz slid a low effort past Ollie Taylor after he was played through on goal.

And the visitors doubled their lead on 24 minutes when Mace scored from distance to leave the Rouslers stunned.

However, Bromsgrove halved the deficit on 62 minutes when Sweeney stepped up to score from the penalty spot after player-manager Michael McGrath was fouled in the box.

And McGrath then headed against the crossbar as Sporting searched for an equaliser whilst Kyle Belmonte hit the post at the other end for Evesham as the visitors held on to claim a memorable win.

Sporting are next in action at home to Bedford Town on Saturday, January 14 with kick-off at 3pm at the Victoria Ground.
