FOOTBALL - Sporting secure impressive point at runaway leaders Banbury

TOBY RAISON scored his second goal in as many Bromsgrove Sporting appearances to help the Rouslers earn a point in a 1-1 draw at runaway leaders Banbury United.

The Hereford loanee backed up his debut goal against Lowestoft Town last weekend with a crucial equaliser at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.

And the result leaves Sporting in 15th place in the Southern League Premier Central table, five points clear of the relegation zone.

The game began after a 30-minute delay to kick-off on health and safety grounds, due to an incident close to the ground.

And just five minutes later, Banbury took the lead when Jay Williams headed home after he leapt highest to guide an effort past Rouslers goalkeeper Ollie Taylor.

Sporting were undeterred by the early setback with Jamie Molyneux, Will Shorrock and Josh Quaynor all trying their luck.

However, the Puritans almost doubled their lead shortly before the break when Chris Wreh shot narrowly wide.

Sporting keeper Taylor saved from Wreh early in the second period after Morgan Roberts had missed the target for the home side.

The Rouslers came close to an equaliser when Charlie Wise headed against the crossbar from Will Shorrock’s corner.

And Bromsgrove eventually drew level when Raison turned home Shorrock’s free-kick on 65 minutes to hand the visitors a deserved share of the spoils.

Sporting are next in action at home to Rushall Olympic on Saturday, February 12 with kick-off at 3pm at the Victoria Ground.
