FOOTBALL - Sporting end winless run with Hednesford victory

BROMSGROVE Sporting claimed their first win since the turn of the year with a 3-1 victory against lowly Hednesford Town as the Rouslers ended their five-game winless run.

Tom Taylor sealed the win with a captain’s goal in the second half after Brandon Smalley and Mo Njie netted either side of the break at the Victoria Ground.

The result means Sporting sit 13th in the Southern League Premier Central table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Bromsgrove were dealt a blow in the lead up to the match with star striker Dan Sweeney absent ahead of a move to a team in a higher division.

That meant Miro Pais partnered Smalley in attack whilst Jack Newell returned to the side having recovered from a head injury picked up three weeks previously.

Despite their lowly league position, Hednesford made a quick start and were denied the opening goal when Newell cleared off the line from their first attack.

At the other end, Sporting went close when Smalley hit the side netting before the same player opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a fine free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

However, Hednesford responded just six minutes later when James McQuilkin fired home from close range after Ollie Taylor could only parry Todd Parker’s shot into the scorer’s path.

The Rouslers looked a side transformed after the break and regained the lead on 49 minutes when Njie’s mazy run down the left ended with the midfielder slotting the ball past Town goalkeeper Luke Jackson.

And Sporting sealed the points on 57 minutes when Taylor headed in Smalley’s free-kick from the right to put daylight between the two teams.

The two teams traded chances as Kyle Bennett and Jordan Graham went close for the visitors before Pais and Njie combined for Sporting but were unable to extend the lead.

Taylor made a brilliant save at the death to keep out substitute Stanley Asomugha’s shot as the Rouslers held on to claim their first win since the turn of the year.

Bromsgrove are next in action away at Basford United on Saturday, February 11 with kick-off at 3pm at Greenwich Avenue.
