FOOTBALL - Sporting end season with defeat at Hitchin as safety secured

BROMSGROVE Sporting finished the campaign with a 1-0 defeat away at Hitchin Town with their place in the league secured for next season.

The Rouslers were beaten by Jacob Hutchinson’s 79th minute goal at Top Field as Sporting ended the season winless in three matches.

And the result means Bromsgrove end the campaign in 18th position in the Southern League Premier Central table, eight points clear of the automatic relegation places.

The visitors first chance fell to Mike McGrath when he fired over before Josh Dugmore’s dangerous cross was missed by everybody in a Bromsgrove shirt.

Wing-back Dom Perkins had Sporting’s best opportunity of the half when his shot was well-saved by Hitchin goalkeeper Charles Horlock.

And McGrath tested Horlock again just before the break with the Hitchin keeper again keeping Bromsgrove at bay.

Sporting’s second-half substitute Jamie Molyneux almost scored with his first touch only to see his effort go narrowly over the bar.

However, the Rouslers were caught out on the counter attack when Hitchin broke from a Sporting corner as Hutchinson fired hard and low past Taylor from 20-yards out to give the home side the lead.

Sporting pushed for an equaliser with Perkins going closest in injury time but Gavin Hurren’s side were unable to find a leveller as their season ended in disappointing fashion.
