FOOTBALL - Sporting end losing run with draw at Rushden

RYAN Edmunds early opener was cancelled out in the second half as 10-man Bromsgrove Sporting ended their five-game losing run with a 1-1 draw away at AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

Edmunds’ goal put Sporting into the lead only for Kieron Dawes to see red for two yellow cards and Evangelos Empochontsifat to draw Rushden level just past the hour mark at Hayden Road.

The result leaves Sporting in 15th place in the Southern League Premier Central table.

And Edmunds’ goal came after just six minutes when he fired home from Ammar Dyer’s pass after good work from Dan Sweeney.

The visitors almost grabbed a second soon after when Mikey Taylor was played in by Sweeney only for the striker to see his effort blocked.

And the offside flag came to Sporting’s rescue later in the half after Hamilton Bunga had the ball past returning Rouslers goalkeeper Ollie Taylor.

However, Sporting were reduced to 10-men on 51 minutes when full-back Dawes picked up his second yellow card having been booked shortly before the break.

Rushden equalised on 64 minutes when Empochontsifat’s effort was deemed to have crossed the line despite Sporting protesting they had cleared the ball off the line.

Sporting are next in action at home to Royston Town on  Saturday, November 5 with kick-off at 3pm at the Victoria Ground.
