FOOTBALL - Sporting beaten on the road at Leiston

BROMSGROVE Sporting saw their three-game unbeaten run come to an end after suffering a 1-0 defeat away at Leiston in midweek.

The game was decided by George Quantrell’s goal on 39 minutes as Sporting were unable to find an equaliser at Victory Road.

And the result means Bromsgrove sit 18th in the Southern League Premier Central table, two points clear of Nuneaton Borough who occupy the final potential relegation place.

The away side controlled the proceedings for the opening quarter of an hour with Callum Ebanks, Nathan Hayward, Jamie Molyneux, Michael McGrath and Dom Perkins all failing to break the deadlock.

McGrath was then called into action at the other end when he cleared William Davies’ shot off the line before Sporting keeper Ollie Taylor made a stunning triple save to keep the scores level.

And Leiston were then awarded a penalty when Josh Dugmore fouled Davies just inside the box following a rapid counter attack.

However, Bromsgrove keeper Taylor made another fantastic save, diving to his right, to push the resulting spot kick over the crossbar.

Leiston eventually made the breakthrough when Quantrell fired into the top left corner from Finlay Barnes’ cross following another counter attack.

Gavin Hurren’s side came close to an equaliser at the end of the half when Josh Quaynor’s superb free-kick was tipped over the bar.

Sporting’s Joe Willis and Molyneux had decent efforts on goal early in the second period whilst substitute Matt Barnes-Homer had another chance late on but the visitors were unable to break through a stubborn Leiston defence.

Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Needham Market on Saturday, April 9 with kick-off at 3pm at the Victoria Ground.
