DAN Sweeney scored his first Bromsgrove Sporting hat-trick to help the Rouslers win a seven-goal thriller 4-3 against Stamford AFC and advance to the next round of the FA Cup.

Sporting recovered from an early deficit to draw level through Miro Pais before Sweeney netted twice before half time to put Bromsgrove in command.

Stamford hit back after the break only for Sweeney to complete his treble from the penalty spot before the visitors set up a tense finish with their third goal in a pulsating encounter at the Victoria Ground.

Sporting have been drawn against National League North side Hereford in Second Round Qualifying with the game to take place on Saturday, September 17 with kick-off at 3pm at Edgar Street.

And Bromsgrove made a disastrous start when Stamford were awarded a penalty after just two minutes as Jonathan Margetts scored the resulting spot kick.

However, the Rouslers drew level on 17 minutes when a free-kick was cleared back to Pais who smashed a first time effort into the bottom left corner.

And the turnaround was complete just five minutes later when Sweeney was pushed over in the box and picked himself up to coolly slot home the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Sporting added their third goal on 38 minutes when Sweeney produced a superb touch and finish after tireless work from Lewis Wright to win back possession deep in the Stamford half.

However, Stamford hit back on 58 minutes when a free-kick from the right was headed in at the near post by Margetts.

Bromsgrove were awarded the third penalty of the match just past the hour mark with Sweeney again rolling the ball home to complete his hat-trick.

The visitors reduced the deficit on 76 minutes when Rob Morgan found the corner from the edge of the penalty but Sporting held firm to book their place in the next round.

Sporting are next in action away at AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, September 10 with kick-off at 3pm at Hayden Road.
