DAN HOPKINS scored a last-gasp goal to complete a thrilling comeback for Bromsgrove Rovers over basement side Match of The Day FC, writes Neil Gordon.
David Ikeija and Sonny Waters gave the struggling visitors a shock two goal lead early on at Charford Road on Saturday before Tom Hill and Bailey Depper Gwilliams combined to level the scores by half-time. Substitute Dan Hopkins then unleashed a last-gasp strike to complete the dramatic comeback.
The result means Bromsgrove remain two points clear at the top of Division Two of the Birmingham League.
Match of the Day had the perfect start when Ikeija put his side ahead with a close finish after just 90 seconds as Bromsgrove were caught cold.
Minutes later and Rovers were in trouble as Waters doubled the visitors advantage when he pounced to finish off a free-flowing move.
Bromsgrove managed to get a foothold on the game and received a life-line when Hill hooked the ball home from the edge of the box.
The Green’s growing pressure paid off and they levelled on the stroke of half-time when Depper Gwilliams confidently buried a penalty after a foul on Jack Hopper.
In the second-half Depper Gwilliams twice could have won it for Bromsgrove but he was denied by the impressive visiting ‘keeper.
And as the clock ticked down Rovers never-say-die attitude was evident when they launched yet another attack on the visitor’s goal which saw Hopkins go past the ‘keeper and score to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory to the joy of his team mates and coaching staff.
Rover’s manager Spencer Machin said he was delighted with the win and three points but not the performance.
Bromsgrove face Kings Heath Rangers in the County Cup at Thimble Mill Recreation Ground on Saturday. Kick-off is 2pm and admission free.
