JAMES Fry is growing in confidence after Alvechurch claimed back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since October with a 2-1 victory against Hitchin Town.

Church completed a late turnaround to see off Hitchin at Lye Meadow as Dan Sweeney equalised before Yaw Ofosu headed in the winner six minutes from time.

And with Alvechurch now just one point from safety in the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone, Fry feels his side are growing in belief and confidence.

Fry said: “We had to be patient and wait a bit longer than anyone in the ground would have wanted but the win was fully deserved.

“We’re in games again, I don’t want us to be having to climb the mountain all that often, but if we’re in the game, we know we can put teams to the sword, the key thing is being in the game.

“The feeling in the dressing room has always been good and positive but now the boys are giving me lots of confidence.

“I can see them working the game out a little bit more and wins help that because it helps with confidence and decision-making, we’re slowly getting there.

“There’s a difference between being positive and really believing, the wins will build belief and confidence, since the turn of the year, the boys have shown they can dig in and play their football.”

Hitchin broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when a corner from the right came all the way through to Joshua Popoola who saw his shot deflect past a helpless Ronnie Hollingshead in the Church goal.

However, Church eventually drew level on 75 minutes as Sweeney worked space for a shot before curling a sensational effort into the top left corner from the edge of the penalty area.

And the home side completed the comeback on 84 minutes as Ofosu guided Nick Clayton-Phillips’s corner from the right into the bottom left corner with a well-placed header.

Alvechurch are next in action away at Stourbridge on Tuesday, January 23 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the War Memorial Athletic Ground.
