ALEX Footman’s goal sent Bromsgrove Rovers AFC into the semi-finals of the Intermediate Cup with a 1-0 upset win against Division One side Amanah.

Rovers captain Footman scored the game’s only goal on 23 minutes as Bromsgrove recorded a memorable victory at South Bromsgrove High School.

The club have now won their last seven matches in all competitions and are unbeaten since November.

Rovers took the game to their higher division opponents straight from kick-off as Keian Savage, Dan Hagyard and Charlie Rowe all had efforts on goal in the opening exchanges.

And Tom Hill then went close with an effort from distance that flew inches past the post with the Amanah goalkeeper scrambling to cover the shot.

Bromsgrove deservedly took the lead midway through the first half as Footman rose highest to head home from a corner.

Rovers frustrated their opponents throughout with Amanah’s manager booked for kicking the ball away following the award of a home throw-in.

Amanah put Rovers under pressure in the closing stages but the home side held firm to secure their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Rovers manager Spencer Machin said: “This was a massive win for the team in beating higher opposition.

“We’ve now got two semi-finals to look forward to.”

Rovers travel to Arden Forest in a friendly on Saturday, January 27 with kick-off at 2pm at Tudor Grange Academy.
