FOOTBALL - Church produce sensational comeback to reach next round of FA Cup

DANNY Waldron came off the bench to inspire Alvechurch to a remarkable comeback win against Mickleover as Church battled back from two goals down to win 3-2 and advance to the next round of the FA Cup.

Waldron scored twice in the space of six second-half minutes to turn the game in Church’s favour after Tyrell Skeen-Hamilton’s stunning free-kick had initially reduced a two-goal half time deficit at the Don Amott Arena.

And Alvechurch have been drawn against Northern Premier League Midlands side Harborough Town in Second Round Qualifying with the game to take place on Saturday, September 17 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.

Church’s division rivals Mickleover took the lead on 12 minutes when Ethan Mann looped a cross over Church goalkeeper Dan Jezeph from the right edge of the penalty area.

And the home side doubled their lead on 23 minutes as Ryan Wilson curled a free-kick into the right corner of the goal from 20-yards out after Jezeph took a big step in the other direction.

Ian Long’s side looked a different team after the interval and reduced the deficit on 57 minutes when Skeen-Hamilton curled a wonderful free-kick into the top right corner from 30-yards out.

And Church then had the chance to draw level after Jamie Willets was elbowed in the box only for the penalty to be saved.

However, from the resulting corner, substitute Waldron headed in from close range on 67 minutes after he reacted quickest to Willets’s initial header.

And Waldron completed a memorable comeback for the visitors just six minutes later when he headed into the bottom right corner from Brad Burton’s excellent cross from the left.

Alvechurch are next in action away at Royston Town on Saturday, September 10 with kick-off at 3pm at Garden Walk.
