FOOTBALL - Bromsgrove Rovers AFC targeting silverware ahead of season opener this weekend

BROMSGROVE Rovers AFC have set a target of winning a trophy this season as they prepare for their first experience of life in Division Two of the Birmingham and District Football League, writes Neil Gordon.

Rovers were belatedly promoted over the summer and hold ambitions of winning a trophy ahead of the start of the new league season this weekend.

And Rovers assistant manager Kristian Rock insists Bromsgrove are targeting success this season.

Rock said: “We are in a really positive place right now. We are delighted to have retained most of last season’s squad – which won an incredible 11 of our final 12 league games – and we have also signed some good new players as well.

“The squad has been tested in tough pre-season friendlies against higher-league opposition, and our targets for the new season are to be competitive and win a trophy to show for all of the hard work.”

Rovers completed their pre-season campaign last weekend with a friendly at Shipston Excelsior as Tom Clewes netted in a 2-1 defeat.

The club has made remarkable progress since their formation just three years ago by a group of former Bromsgrove Rovers supporters, with the outfit now establishing a base in the town at South Bromsgrove High School.

During a busy close-season the club launched a new reserve side and the adult’s men’s team accepted a place in Division Two of the Birmingham League, despite just missing out on automatic promotion from Division Three last season.

The Greens start the new campaign against North Solihull at Chelmsley Town FC on Saturday, September 7 with kick-off at 2.30pm at Coleshill Road and admission free.

Elsewhere the club’s newly-formed reserve team also launch their inaugural season in Division Six of the Birmingham League on Saturday. They welcome FC Manor to the Charford Recreation Ground with kick-off at 2.30pm and admission free.
