ALVECHURCH FC clinched the final play-off place on goal difference after Church came from behind to beat Royston Town 3-1 and other results went their way.
Church’s win coupled with AFC Rushden and Diamonds 1-0 home defeat to lowly Nuneaton Borough ensured Ian Long’s side secured an unlikely top-five finish.
Alvechurch finished ahead of the Diamonds on goal difference after winning four of their last five Southern League Premier Central matches whilst the latter won just one of their last six games.
However, Church looked set to be denied an extension to their season when Adam Murray’s goal on 19 minutes put Royston into the lead.
The home side drew level on 33 minutes through Nick Clayton-Phillips before Daniel Waldron and Zak Brown struck in the second period to hand Alvechurch the points at Lye Meadow.
And that result lifted Alvechurch into fifth place in the table after Charlie Dowd’s 33rd minute goal condemned Rushden to a shock home defeat.
Alvechurch play league runners-up Peterborough Sports in the play-off semi-finals on Tuesday, April 26 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Bee Arena.
